This is an interesting drive, one of our favorite "Driver's Roads" near Tucson. Starting out at the Titan Missile Museum, we turn west past a tailings pile for the Twin Buttes copper mine on the right. Just as we turn right on to South Mission Road, we see the Sierrita Mine ahead of us. This mine has one of the largest quantities of copper reserves in the world. The tailings pile on our left is from this mine. Fresh pavement and lush, greenery thanks to our monsoon rains greet us as we travel north. We leave these two open pit mines behind and enjoy some twisty, hilly fun. Eventually we approach Helmet Peak, a distinctive black mountain shaped unsurprisingly. As we continue north we pass by the tailing of the Mission Mine, and the Komatsu Proving Ground, where you can see several mine dump trucks parked outside! Once past the mine we enter the Tohono O'odham nation. Several more miles through this native land and we finally end our journey at the San Xavier del Bac Mission, "The White Dove of the Desert".
