#housedesign #concrete #brutalist #architecture Takamine-cho House, designed by Tomoaki Uno Architects in Nagoya, Japan, is a unique residence that merges traditional Japanese masonry techniques with modern architecture. Completed in 2021, the house is strategically located in an upscale area near universities, offering a serene yet accessible living environment. The project’s defining feature is the use of field masonry, a technique historically reserved for castle foundations and stone walls, which presented significant design challenges. Inspiration from Mexico’s Tenayuca pyramids led to the creation of a Japanese masonry pyramid, repurposed as the client's study. Throughout the construction, material choices and design elements were refined to balance the imposing stone structure with contemporary aesthetics. The house integrates two gardens to enhance openness and privacy, ensuring natural light and ventilation. Takamine-cho House stands as a remarkable fusion of tradition and innovation, demonstrating how heritage techniques can be reinterpreted in modern architecture.
