The City has been Honda’s crown prince in India since it was launched in 1998. The model has become a brand in itself and even the Maruti Suzuki SX4 couldn’t beat the Japanese sedan. However, one car that became a thorn in the City’s foot was the Verna. Not only did it offer many segment first features, it also took advantage of the City’s lack of a diesel engine. Now though, in their latest avatars, both sedans have a lot more in common, but have individual selling-points that set them apart from each other. So what are these USPs and which car will match your needs better? Here’s a head-to-head to find out exactly that! The comparison starts with the exteriors of both cars, on the front side the nose of Verna looks better with its twin slated chrome grill that makes more sense over City’s fat single piece grill. Moving towards the side both cars have distinct character and shoulder line but City is a new car as Verna with its facelift only got changes at front and rear, while the sides are unchanged. The wheels of both cars attract equally as the diamond cut alloys of Verna look apart , City’s dynamic 5-spoke make a statement of their own. At the rear City stands as a clear winner with its wide angular taillight joined by a sleek dash of chrome. Dimensionally, Verna and City gets LxWxH as 4375x1700x1475mm and 4440x1695x1495 respectively. While the wheelbase stands at 2600 mm for Honda and 2570 mm for Verna. And mechanically, City gets 1.5 litre i-DTEC that produces 100 PS of power and 200 Nm of Torque. Verna gets a 1.6 litre CRDi motor that produces 128 PS of power and 260 Nm of torque. Both have good fuel economy, but Verna puts out a figure of 23.6 kmpl while City gets an edge with its 26 kmpl. Performance-wise, Verna gets a strong diesel that helps it pull strongly after 1900 rpms - turbo lag interferes before that - but once it crosses the 1900 mark it gets very active. The City, on the other hand manages the lag in a better way and is smooth to pull. The cabin noise is lesser in Verna than the City. City’s drive is much more composed than that of Verna as it stays grounded and the weight transfer to the steering is just fine. And comparatively the suspension of Honda is on the stiffer side but that too inspires confidence. The road noise filters inside more in comparison to the Verna. Inside of these two are in tandem with the time but Honda seems to have an edge as Verna’s cabin is the same as the old car. Honda’s infotainment system gets a better touchscreen with Sat Nav, it also gets sun/moon roof that is absent in Verna. Also, the interior space of City is far better than that of Verna, at the rear City can comfortably accommodate a tall person of over 6 ft height while in case of Verna it is a very tight fit. The boot compartment of Honda might be 510 litre over Verna’s 460 litres but the latter fits luggage more neatly. On the price perspective both are priced very competitively, Honda City falls in a bracket of Rs. 7.5 to 11.8 lacs while Verna falls in Rs. 7.7 to 12.1 lacs (all prices ex-showroom delhi). Verdict : Honda City will be a better choice if your preference is to give equal luxury to every passenger as it is a better family car with more space and comfort.
