By Masauso Mkwayaya Forty-eight health facilities have been constructed across Eastern Province over the past five years to improve healthcare delivery. Eastern Province Minister, PETER PHIRI, says 30 maternity and mothers’ shelters have also been built. Mr. PHIRI notes that these facilities are equipped with modern neonatal units and delivery rooms to enhance maternal health services. He also says the government has established a renal unit at Saint Francis Hospital and plans to open another at Chipata Central Hospital. Mr PHIRI says these investments have greatly strengthened the province’s capacity to respond to healthcare needs. The Provincial Minister’s remarks were delivered on his behalf by Public Health Specialist at the Provincial Health Office, BERNARD CHIMUNGU, during the handover of 850,000 kwacha by ZSIC Life for the rehabilitation of the female surgical ward at Chipata Central Hospital. ZSIC Life Chief Executive Officer, COLLINS HAMUSONDE, said the rehabilitation demonstrates the company’s commitment to supporting healthcare services. Mr. HAMUSONDE added that the company, which also provides health-related insurance covers, aims to extend support beyond its core services to healthcare delivery. Chipata Mayor, GEORGE MWANZA, said ZSIC Life’s contribution will complement government efforts. Chipata Central Hospital Senior Medical Superintendent, MBINGA MBINGA, said the upgraded female surgical ward will improve service delivery at the facility.
