LUST! Murder! Deception! Based on actual events! LUST FOR GOLD (1949) stars Glenn Ford, Ida Lupino, Gig Young, Edgar Buchanan and Will Geer. The legend of the Lost Dutchman Mine is the basis for this exceptional Western Noir. Story. Casting. Cinematography. Locations. All weave together in flashbacks for this dark tale of murder and greed out west. It is…excellent! Star Glenn Ford is in peak form as The Dutchman who in the 1880s has discovered a lost gold mine near the Superstition Mountains, somewhere east of Phoenix, Arizona. LUST FOR GOLD is the name of the film and lust for gold is what everyone craves. Made one year after THE TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE, this quest adds a lecherous, seductive woman to the mix of gold seekers. That woman is portrayed by the magnificent Ida Lupino in one of her finest roles. Can Glenn trust Ida and Gig Young, her weak-willed husband? Of course not. The supporting cast includes a who’s who of western film veterans. There’s frequent Glenn Ford co-star, Edgar Buchanan, who is just as adept at drama, sleaze and dental work as he is with comedy. With Will Geer (Grandpa Walton and Wyatt Earp in WINCHESTER ’73), Arthur Hunnicutt, Jay Silverheels, John Doucette, Paul Ford, Tom Tyler, Myrna Dell, Trevor Bardette, Hayden Rorke, Arthur Space, Will Wright, Percy Hilton, old timers Edmund Cobb, George Chesebro, Eddy Waller, and Kermit Maynard and even young Billy Gray and Karolyn Grimes. Wow is right! Director George Marshall, who helmed both DESTRY RIDES AGAIN and DESTRY, began the film as the sole director, but he and producer S. Sylvan Simon didn’t get along and Simon took over the film. Fortunately, the Dir of Photography stayed. That man was future Oscar winner Archie Stout, fresh from FORT APACHE and soon to lens THE QUIET MAN with Winton Hoch for John Ford. The Arizona locations he photographed in black and white are stunning. This is a film not to miss. And remember, all of our Patreon Posse members are watching this without commercials.
