Mental Health crisis but not a bed in regional Victoria

The Victorian Government must deliver on its promise to young people in crisis by funding specialist mental health beds across the North East. One of the key recommendations from the Royal Commission into Mental Health tabled in the Victorian Parliament in March 2021 was for localised care – “close to their families, carers, supporters and networks”. Despite this, once a week a young person aged between 15 and 24 is transported to either Box Hill in Melbourne or Orange in NSW for treatment. That treatment is, on average, a six-day stay removed from family and friends. For many, even these beds are unavailable due to their high demand.
