Felix reached a maximum of speed of 1,342.8 km/h (833mph) through the near vacuum of the stratosphere before being slowed by the atmosphere later during his 4:20 minute long freefall. The 43-year-old Austrian skydiving expert also broke two other world records (highest freefall, highest manned balloon flight), leaving the one for the longest freefall to project mentor Col. Joe Kittinger. A group of engineers/designers from San Francisco made the balloon launch on . Shot with 2 HD Hero cameras from GoPro. Launched from the California coast near Davenport, landed in Crows Landing 70 miles away. Peak altitude 80,000 feet. Acquired GPS, pressure, accelerometer, and temperature data with a Shadowbox (shadow.com). A big thank you to Kevin Macko for the great footage! Geoff (14) and I spent over 8 months building and planning this flight. Geoff studied for and passed the FCC exam to operate a ham radio station so that we could track the balloon as it flew. One of the fun things Geoff wanted to test was what would happen to a Twinkie after a wild ride over 3x as high as the airlines fly :) So we sent an unwrapped Twinkie up to an altitude of 95 thousand feet above the earth strapped to a weather balloon - and then Geoff ate it. In addition to the Twinkie we sent up a marshmallow (which swelled as the pressure dropped and according to the kids tasted "normal") some cameras (a Go Pro HD and Canon G9 running CHDK) and temperature sensors connected to an rduino...Long Trail School flies high altitude balloon and recovers onboard video footage --- Original Sound----- BalloonSat launch from Spaceport Indiana showing the balloon bursting at 95,000 feet. Make sure to turn your volume up, it'll make you jump out of your seat when it pops. Home Instead Senior Care sponsored a weather balloon launch in West Point, GA. The results were amazing, never seen before footage. Many people helped with this project. Thank you to Dr. Ben Longmier, PhD., founder of projectaether.org for answering several emails about how to launch a weather balloon.
