Shalom and welcome to our spring semester! Today we began the first of several weeks of exploration of the Babylonian Talmud's approach to Jewish marriage and divorce (and everything in between). We explored the evolution of Jewish marriage practices beginning with TaNaKh (the Hebrew Bible), discussing the story of Adam and Eve, paradigmatic biblical narratives about the patriarchs and matriarchs, and the Biblical concept of "marriage" as little more than the exchange of property. Our discussion then delved into the Talmudic tractate Kiddushin, which outlines the ways a woman can be acquired in marriage, and we extensively examined the concept of holiness in Jewish tradition. We touched on feminist critiques of biblical stories and the challenges of reconciling traditional Jewish marriage concepts with modern understandings.
