Home Brew: Chocolate Porter Brewed From Grain in a Demijohn 5.3% ABV -    • Making An All-Grain Chocolate Porter, 5.3%...   Hey folks in this film I'll b making a chocolate porter beer, which I have brewed from grain in a demijohn. The film goes through the stages of recipe and brew, clearing, bottling and tasting, so it is an all-in-one film from grain to glass. The ingredients for the chocolate porter are as follows: 150g crushed roasted barley, 1kg low colour chocolate malt, chocolate peanut butter Flavdrops by MyProtein, 454g honey and 5 litres of spring water. I begin by putting my grains into separate pans with spring water and adding the heat very low so that the temperature increases very gradually for 90 minutes until they begun to simmer, at this point I turned off the heat and allowed them to cool. I then brung them back to heat up to the boil and was going to boil them for 45 minutes, however a boil over reduced that to about 15 minutes, by this point though I'd had enough so left the wort to cool for 15 minutes before straining it into the demijohn. I then poured the honey into the demijohn and left it to cool for a couple of hours. I activated my yeast in warm water, I used a combination of Lalvin EC1118 yeast and Bubblegum Ale Yeast. I added the chocolate flavouring into the demijohn, I added two full pipettes into the demijohn. The original gravity was 1.070. Fermentation took 2 weeks, I then racked it off and attempted to clear it with ClearIt wine finings. The beer was siphoned into bottles containing three carbonation drops and a pipette of chocolate flavouring. The final gravity was high at 1.030, which made a final ABV of 5.3%. This was a decent beer, it was sweet, it poured reasonably well with a small head, it was sparkling and the flavour was decent. The chocolate was over-ridden by the smokiness of the grains but it was still a good brew to drink. I'd make it again, but hopefully next time with less mess and a bit more chocolate, cheers!
