My approach is the following: I believe that an album is as good as the sum of its parts and how well they work together. So when rating an album, I rate every song individually from 0 to 5 (0 = filler track/ far below average, 1 = lower than average, 2 = average, 3 = higher than average, 4 = great track/ stands out from competition, 5 = one of the best tracks ever/ there can only be 100 "5"s in total from all rap albums). An important note is that I rate tracks in context to the year they came out because I feel that new and creative ideas should be honored and replicating an existing concept doesn't have the same charm to me. Additionally skits and interludes don't count, but they can influence the overall feel of the album (more to that later). Instrumental tracks are valued half compared to the tracks with lyrics, because I believe that they define an album less, but are still valuable. If there is an Intro or Outro to the album it can give 5 points each to the final score. Finally the opening or closing song is valued double because I believe that these are essential when it comes to a complete album and they influence the feeling the album conveys more than tracks in the middle. The resulting formula is: [(Sum of songpoints + Sum of instrumentalpoints * 0.5) / Sum of Songs + Sum of Instrumentals * 0.5] * 10 (+ Intro/ Outro bonus) The "* 10" is to remove decimals and so that the Intro/ Outro bonus is only a small plus. Finally, finally sometimes I give an album +30 or -30 points at the end if there is a circumstance that influences the entirety of the album in a positive (or negative) way that isn't specific to any song on it. So for example great (or really annoying) skits, a nice (or bad) concept to the album, great song arrangement, also personal connection to the album (It's still my list in the end), etc.
