An Overland Adventure in the Oregon High Desert | Glass Buttes & Beyond | Oregon Overlanding

Join us on a little overland adventure, as we hit the trails, hunt obsidian at Glass Buttes, and find the Lost Forest of Ponderosas in the middle of shifting sand dunes! Weather was a factor here, but we managed to have a great time, and see some new things despite that. Glass Buttes has been one of our favorite, go-to destinations for a lot of years now. This is the perfect place to setup a basecamp, and then explore all the trails and hunt rocks all day. It also makes a great stop over point on a longer overland adventure as well. We've used Glass Buttes as a first or last camp (sometimes both!) on trips to Steens and the Alvord. Glass Buttes is a designated rockhounding site on BLM land, so collection of obsidian here is allowed. Do be mindful that there are a handful of grandfathered in private claims in the area. You can find maps online. Be respectful if you see claim markers and don't collect anything in the boundaries, but do be aware that you are free to travel over any of the land here: It's BLM, so it's YOUR land.
