Evolutionary Psychology of Patriarchal Conformity: PART 4 Madonna Wh-re Complex Series

Coco explores theories of evolutionary psychology that argue people who adopt sexually restricted strategies of patriarchal monogamy are unconsciously motivated to suppress the freedoms of others. This theory helps explain why ostensibly “prolife” people seek to restrict women’s bodily and social autonomy, while rejecting any actual investments in the wellbeing of children. Building on Part Three where we established that Madonna Wh-re social archetypes are politically leveraged to mobilize women against women’s rights and freedoms, Coco explains how patriarchal people perceive any freedoms remotely associated with promiscuity as threats to their material, social, and identity stability. Please remember, promiscuity is the lack of any imposed custom on sexual relations. In this context, this makes any sexual contact outside of heterosexual marriages a form of casual sex that must be opposed or thwarted. Relying on research published in The Conversation by by Jaimie Arona Krems, professor of Psychology with Oklahoma State University and Martie Haselton, professor of psychology with University of California, Los Angeles, Coco explores how this will to enforce patriarchal conformity extends well beyond controlling women as resources to attacks on marriage equality, equal pay standards, and what media children can consume. While theories of evolutionary psychology are helpful for understanding the contradictory political goals of “pro-life” Madonnas and patriarchal people, these theories are not mandates. Their strategy of mandatory patriarchal conformity does not mean humans are hardwired to live patriarchally, or even that patriarchal dominance is a natural organization for human life. This strategy developed in response to the social environment and as people stand against their will to enforce conformity, we shift the social environment and create space for healthier life strategies to flourish.
