High Burnup Nuclear Fuel Storage Demonstration Project

EPRI and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) collaborated to load and monitor the internal conditions of a dry storage system containing high burnup nuclear fuel. High burnup fuel is fuel that has had more energy extracted from it in the nuclear reactor during operations and is depleted to a level greater than 45 gigawatt days per metric ton of uranium. The objective of the project was to evaluate high burnup fuel performance during loading operations and throughout the long-term dry storage in a helium environment, using instrumentation installed inside the cask. The information and results from this demonstration will be used by the nuclear industry and regulators for license renewal and safely managing used high burnup fuel during periods of dry storage.
