Genre: Screamo Year: 2002 Label: Curtaincall Music - CCM 001 1. Remedial Learning (00:00) 2. It Might Be A Setup (01:04) 3. Fashion Emergency (03:54) 4. Gypsy Switch (05:05) Seyarse were a chaotic screamo band from the Chicago area, as well as immediate predecessor to esteemed math rock band Piglet. Asher played guitar in both bands, while Seyarse's bass player Matt migrated to drums for Piglet (Never forget the classic live video of Piglet playing 'Bug Stomp' at a birthday party, where Matt flawlessly rips through the track while smoking a cig the entire time). When it comes to this sort of erratic, totally unrestrained screamo ('emoviolence' - if you insist on calling it that) Seyarse are criminally underappreciated. The Orchid influence is undeniable (for context, "Dance Tonight..." and the Skull split were released only two years prior to this) but in between blistering octave riffs there are some subtler influences from post-hardcore and early emotive hardcore (For example, the riff at about 0:27 in "Remedial Learning", as well as the bass break + middle section of "It Might Be A Setup"). The vocals here are completely unhinged; relentless shrieking, sometimes to the point where there's an audible struggle to stay on rhythm, or seemingly no time to breathe between cadences (See: "Gypsy Switch"). While I have pretty much nothing but praise for this short-lived band, I do want to mention that, as pointed out by a close friend of mine, the bass break section in "It Might Be A Setup" sounds almost directly ripped off from the Botch song "C. Thomas Howell as the 'Soul Man'" ( • Botch - We Are The Romans [Full Album] . Not a criticism per se, but it does point to some influences outside of the realm of strictly emo/hardcore. The band's only other release is a split 12" with La Mantra De Fhiqria, which I will get around to uploading eventually. There's also some live recordings available on David Norman's blog, Open Mind Saturated Brain, alongside one track from the aforementioned split.
