there’s a lot of terms out there - as someone who tries to have a simple mindset about life and circumstances - so to help understand what is going on here I often refer to the conflict of identity that was talked about by Erik Erikson, a pschoanalyst who lived in the 20th century. Questions about gender identity can occur as early as the age of 3, but Erik Erikson described that people in their teenage years, beginning at 13 years old, deal with an inner conflict about their identity and if they don’t deal with it they get confused about their roles in life - whether it be gender roles or their roles adapting into society. Erikson hypothesizes that some mental diseases can originate from one’s identity issues - such as gender-identity disorders, borderline psychotic episodes - which often refers to psychotic episodes when people may significant emotional distress like from a relationship issue, or people with identity issues may get delinquent behaviors like commit a crime. Someone, according to Erikson, who successfully passes this stage of life gets the virtue of “fidelity” - in other words, they trust and have faith in themselves. According to Erikson, one needs to successfully deal with this identity conflict at this part in their life in order to pass onto the next psychosocial stages in life. So this question about identity is a big one - it affects someone’s relationship with themselves, with others, with God - it’ll have a role in their school and work, family, friends, and hobbies. It can affect their health and have long-lasting changes on their body, especially if someone at decides to have sex-changing surgery that they realize 20 years from now they do not want. This talk will focus on those people who, for at least 6 months time, have noticed marked distress from the gender they were born with and the gender they want to switch to - they may realize a strong desire or interest to switch genders, a strong preference to wear the other gender’s clothes, maybe make-believe play or fantasy to be another gender, or stuff like that. And it causes a conflict or distress in them that hinders their ability to function in school, their social life, or other important areas of their life There are some thoughts of what could be going on here Biologically Testosterone affects the brain development during the fetus’ life Testosterone is a hormone that leads to more masculine features, while estrogen is a hormone that leads to more feminine features - it’s thought that these hormone levels during fetal development can affect which gender one may identify with. For example, someone who is born female but has higher levels of testosterone may biologically be more attracted to masculine characteristics. On the other hand, one who is born a male that has higher levels of estrogen may biologically be more attracted to female stuff. Psychologically The mother-child relationship is thought to play a big role in gender identity. A mother that is hostile or not valuing their child, perhaps even abusing them, can lead to gender identity problems for the child. Some children will feel more valued by choosing another gender. Another possible cause is that a bad event happens, like the mother dies or there is an amended absence of the mother. A young boy may start to become more female to have a more mother role in the family. Another situation is if the father is not present, the relationship between a mother and their child can get overly close. Thus far I’ve told you about some of the biological and psychosocial causes about what can lead one to change their identity. But I think the concept of identity goes much deeper than that - and it takes a spiritual approach. Our identity is most properly rooted not in our genders, or our environments, or our families, or our school or work - but it’s best rooted in our relationship with God. We are spiritual beings made in God’s image and likeness, and from my understanding the best way that humans can identity with God is through Jesus Christ by the power and grace of the Holy Spirit.
