One of my favourite piano pieces of all time, Schumann's Fantasie in C represents a cornerstone of the romantic piano literature, expansive and containing an incredible variety of colour which highlight the passions and emotional turbulence that Schumann himself experienced: he was forcibly separated from his love Clara Wieck by her father, who disapproved of their union. The start of this piece begins with a falling 5th in the right hand, from A ("La" in solfège) to D ("Re"), representing Clara's name, and calling for her. The entire first movement is fantastical and dreamlike, yet is held together with a satisfying structure making it a great example of sonata form done right. The second movement is a march, vigourous and replete with Schumann's beloved dotted rhythms. As this piece was made to support the construction of a Beethoven monument in Bonn, this movement calls to mind the march from Beethoven's late Sonata No. 28 in A Major, Op. 101. The third movement is pure Eusebius in its starry, dreamy waves of harmony and delicate melodies, evoking a sense of dissolving into the infinite universe. 00:00 – Durchaus fantastisch und leidenschaftlich vorzutragen; Im Legendenton 12:35 – Mäßig. Durchaus energisch 20:14 – Langsam getragen. Durchweg leise zu halten Subscribe: / @colinchang My Piano Learning Journey: • My Piano Learning Journey (from 6-13 Years...
