The New Atlantis by Francis Bacon: Themes, Summary and Analysis

The New Atlantis is an unfinished work that was posthumously published in 1626 after the death of Sir Francis Bacon. It is a scientific utopia in which Bacon suggested that all the social issues and social injustices can be solved by the means of the economic prosperity of the whole society and the means of attaining the prosperity is scientific advancements, discoveries, inventions of new technologies. The name of the Baconian Utopia is Bensalem which suggests the meaning 'Son of Wholeness' and resembles Bethelem, the city of birth of Jesus Christ. In Bensalem, there is a separation of Church and State, there is no religious discrimination and women have equal rights in the utopian island. Jonathan Swift parodied The New Atlantis in the 3rd book of Gulliver Travels. In Gulliver's Travels, the island of Mildendo resembles Bensalem and the people of Mildendo fear attack from the island of Belfusco which parodies the Atlantis talked about in Bacons New Atlantis. The New Atlantis has an exciting character of Jobian the Jew who is starkly different from the other Jew characters of Elizabethan era of English characters including Barabas of Christopher Marlowe (The Jew of Malta) and Shylock of William Shakespeare ( The Merchant of Venice). Bensalem used to be a trades-partner of the old Atlantis in the past, but once the Army of Atlantis decided to attack Bensalem. Atlantis was drowned by God's justice while Bensalem lost a trades-partner. The then king of Bensalem King Solamona decided to cut off all ties from the outer world after that incident, Here Bacon presented a character on the name of Biblical King Solomon but Bacon's king Solamona of Bensalem is totally different from Solomon. King Solomon opposed query of knowledge but King Solamona establishes a society named Solomon's House for the quest of natural knowledge and sciences.
