I think about where my focal point will be and that is where I put most of the detail. I think about how I'm going to paint in different sections of the painting and what colours I will use. I'll often do a study or two before hand on cheaper paper to make sure the painting will work out before I commit to my expensive watercolour paper. In this video I discuss the things I thought about before I started painting and I demonstrate a few different areas of the Chicken painting.
