Strategic Reglobalization: Great power rivalry comes for the multilateral trading system

Dan Ikenson unpacked the critical points of his latest research - Strategic Reglobalization: Great power rivalry comes for the multilateral trading system. He noted that the central premise upon which the rules-based trading system was founded - that voluntary trade is a positive-sum game, has changed. The current system is in disequilibrium because it is premised on outdated conditions. Ikenson observed that the economic and strategic competition that has emerged between the United States and China has produced an atmosphere of intense rivalry and growing distrust, elevating national security concerns above the economic benefits and greater certainty of rules-based trade. He credited the pandemic as being an accelerant to the movement of supply chain resilience and discussed how diversification and not repatriation is the answer to supply chain vulnerability. When talking about the future of the WTO and trading system, Ikenson explained why the concepts of “most-favored nation” and “national treatment” may no longer exist. He said that while those concepts are rooted in the principle of non-discrimination, the international trading system is increasingly turning towards arrangements that show discrimination and favoritism.
