The North Cascades? Incredible. Mind-bending wonder of the world. The Central Cascades? Gorgeous. More beautiful lakes and peaks than almost anywhere in the world. The South Cascades? Criminally slept on. Underdiscussed. Absolutely remarkable. Look, I get why the South Cascades in Washington aren't discussed or celebrated as much as the Central and North cascades. They're further away from major population centers, harder to get to (I'll never forget the feel of many of the forest service roads I've been on), and lack a national park. I'm just saying that some of the most remarkable sights and moments that I've been a part of have taken place while hiking in the South Cascades. This "forgotten middle child" dynamic for the South Cascades works out great for me since I prefer solitude and do everything I can to avoid crowds when I hike. (I see very few others out at the TH at 4am on weekdays) I just wanted to highlight this area for anyone out there like me who prefers maximum nature when they're experiencing nature. For those interested in exploring the south cascades I'll post some of my favorite (non-High Rock Lookout/Saint Helens) hikes in the comments.
