(28 Aug 1998) English/Nat The death of Diana, Princess of Wales inevitably focused attention on her elder son, William. He has inherited her good looks and the shyness she displayed when she was first courted by the media. As the anniversary of her death approaches, APTV looks at how the Prince is coping with the glare of publicity, and how the press is treading cautiously after the hounding suffered by his mother. The mass hysteria which greeted Prince William when he arrived in Vancouver earlier this year took him - and royal courtiers - by surprise. With the death of his mother, Diana, the spotlight is now swinging in his direction, despite strenuous efforts by those who surround him to try to prevent it. Prince William is known to intensely dislike media attention. This is not surprising given the nature of his mother's death and the hounding that she endured in her life. However he understands the insatiable appetite for the smallest bitinformation about him and, in June, decided to give his first interview on the eve of his sixteenth birthday. Peter Archer is the only journalist with an office in Buckingham Palace and Prince William responded to written questions he submitted. SOUNDBITE: (English) "William is not comfortable with the adulation that he gets from teenage girls but he does accept that he's a pin up. We've learnt that he's able to shop for his own clothes, he likes modern fashion. We know that he is a very good swimmer, he likes soccer as well as rugby, he likes water polo as well as tennis. We know that he has taken 12 GCSE exams - that's a lot and he's chosen Geography, Biology and History of Art to study at A level." SUPER CAPTION: Peter Archer, Court Correspondent, Press Association Hardly anything to set the world on fire, but in rarefied royal circles it was gold. But what exactly is about it William that makes him so appealing to young girls? Mizz magazine caters for teenage girls aged 15 to 19. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I think it's his shyness that's really appealing. He's obviously quite streetwise with the things we've seen him do, wearing the cap backwards and the music he's into, but he's also very shy as well - you know, he's not loud and in your face, and I think girls really like that." SUPER CAPTION: Julie Burniston, Features Editor, Mizz magazine William looked shy and embarrassed when he was paraded before the world's media earlier this month to celebrate his great-grandmother's birthday. Despite repeated calls for him to wave, he managed just a brief acknowledgement before heading for safety behind closed doors. On any day of the year there are always youngsters peering curiously through the iron gates of Buckingham Palace in the hope of getting a glimpse of a royal. And it seems all have only warm things to say about Prince William. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Well I think he's really cute and handsome. And I like the way his hair's done, and I think he's just really sweet." SUPER CAPTION: Vox pop SOUNDBITE: (English) "He's really like Diana and he's gorgeous. He's a really down to earth person." SUPER CAPTION: Vox pop SOUNDBITE: (English) "I think he's really cute (laughs). His pictures are like in every single magazine. I think he's a doll, he's great." SUPER CAPTION: Vox pop The number of public photo opportunities to see Prince William is strictly limited. This one, at the Queen's estate in Scotland, was granted shortly before Diana's death. Tim Rook, a photographer for Rex Features, is at nearly every Royal appearance.
