SECCIÓN: CONSERVACIÓN, SEGURIDAD E INTERVENCIONES SOBRE EL PATRIMONIO. "DOCUMENTING LIVING INDUSTRY: ARCHAEOLOGICAL WORK AT VIARCO, PENCIL FACTORY", ponencia de Leonor Medeiros. Factories are subject to the law of technological obsolescence, inevitable over time and only surmountable with the modernisation of equipment and infrastructure. The VIARCO pencil factory, the only one still in activity in the Iberian Peninsula, installed in Vila do Conde in 1907, has been working uninterruptedly since 1941 in its current premises in São João da Madeira, a place known for its important industrial tourism project, preserving historic machinery and techniques but facing the needs of modernization. The history of the factory’s machinery also reveals an international dynamic, which takes us from Japan to Spain, passing through Germany, but most important is the place of the brand in the history of country’s population. In 2019, an archaeology and industrial heritage project was developed for the survey, documentation and valorisation of the site’s heritage, in collaboration with the owner, the Municipality of São João da Madeira, the APAI – Portuguese Association of Industrial Archaeology, and the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of the New University of Lisbon. Although to some it may seem contradictory, the work of archaeology in contexts still operational today, it shows that the gaze and methodologies of archaeology provide a scientific and systematizing vision of the various values present in these places, providing essential knowledge to support their future. This proposal intends to focus on two fundamental aspects in the intervention: on the one hand, the challenges and opportunities in the registration of a living industry, in daily operation, and on the other hand, the necessary adaptations in a process of safeguarding, classifying and musealizing a unit that needs to invest its resources in business efficiency and competitiveness.
