How simplicity leads to universality | Gemma De las Cuevas | TEDxFHKufstein

Why is it so easy to generate complexity? Gemma suggests that this is due to universality — essentially every non-trivial system is universal, and thus able to explore all complexity in its domain. Gemma tries to go to the heart of the matter of universality, revealing a tangled hierarchy and a connection to impossible drawing hands and undecidability. She ends by drawing two hopeful messages for our everyday life from these abstract ideas. Gemma De las Cuevas is a theoretical physicist who loves books and movies, and more generally, knowledge and art. She lives in the middle of the Alps, in Innsbruck.
