Walking Through History: The Mighty Walls of Dubrovnik

The Walls of Dubrovnik surround the Old Town of Dubrovnik and are one of the best-preserved medieval fortification systems in the world. They were built between the 12th and 17th centuries to protect the city when it was part of the Republic of Ragusa. The walls stretch for about 2 kilometres (1.2 miles) and reach up to 25 metres high in some places. They include several defensive towers, forts, and gates, such as Minčeta Tower and Bokar Fortress. Today, the walls are one of Dubrovnik’s most famous attractions, offering beautiful views of the Old Town and the Adriatic Sea, and they are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site that protects Dubrovnik’s historic centre.
