1930 Scammell 100-Tonner •• • The Truck That Broke Roads (Literally) The Scammell 100-Tonner was one of the most remarkable heavy haulage vehicles ever built in the early twentieth century - a machine so large, powerful and unconventional that it remained unmatched by dedicated internal-combustion road vehicles for more than two decades. Conceived to solve a specific challenge - moving enormous steam locomotives and oversized industrial machinery from inland factories to docks over difficult highways - it was developed by Scammell Lorries Ltd. in under eight months and delivered to Marston Road Services in early 1930. Powered initially by a 7-litre petrol engine (86 bhp) and later upgraded with a Gardner 6LW diesel (102 bhp) for better fuel economy, this engineering marvel featured a unique drivetrain with roller chains, eight forward gears, and a massive carrier trailer steered by a dedicated crew member 90 feet behind the driver. Only two full-sized 100-Tonners were ever built; one survives today at the British Commercial Vehicle Museum in Leyland, Lancashire — a legendary tribute to British road transport innovation. #Scammell100Tonner #heavyhaulage #vintagetruck #britishengineering #steamlocomotive #1930s #roadgiant #Gardnerdiesel #MarstonRoadServices #truckhistory #Scammel|Lorries #industrialheritage #LeylandMuseum #engineeringmarvel #rarevehicle
