The final lunar mission of the Apollo program, Apollo 17, did unprecedented science and exploration on the Moon. Gene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt, over the course of three days and three EVAs, would cover nearly 36 km (over 22 mi) on the Lunar Rover, reach a max distance of 7.6 km (4.7 mi) from the Lunar Module, spend over 22 hours outside the LM on the surface, and return 115 kg (254 lb) of samples.
