Or a Women's Association before the NCAA? Title IX Gave Birth to The Trailblazers of the AIAW and the WBL ... Let's Connect the Dots. | WHY IS OUR TRIAD (Title IX, AIAW, WBL) HISTORY IMPORTANT? As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Title IX, we should take a moment to reflect on the women who first stepped through the doors that were opened by this game changing legislation. We must connect the dots from the past to the present and fill in the gaps. When we do not acknowledge every era, every accomplishment … individual and collective … and when seminal moments remain hidden, history becomes omissive and therefore incomplete. Hidden figures and their journeys hold knowledge and inspiration in their grasp. When they remain in the shadows, it takes away the opportunity to share. How can we truly judge how far we have come and have a vision of where we need to go, without knowing where we began? The women who represent the TRIAD (Title IX, AIAW, WBL) can speak from a point of reference that is personal as members of this amazing era. This group and these entities changed the trajectory of women’s sports. For those who played basketball, we see ourselves in the NCAA and WNBA players … they carry our dreams inside them, but do not know or speak our names; they feel uplifted but do not know the source; they continue to soar to new heights but DO … NOT … KNOW who gave them wings. Maya Angelou’s quote sums up the pain of being forgotten … “there is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you”. Who can we tell our story to? Whose responsibility is it to know the history and pass it on? Liz is a trailblazer in the world of women's basketball. Coming up in the game, Title IX legislation gave Liz the opportunity to play basketball for University of Nevada, Las Vegas as one of the first female basketball players to receive athletic scholarship. After college, Liz tried out as a free agent for the newly formed WBL league (a pre-cursor to the WNBA). She and her lifelong teammate and friend Debra Waddy-Rossow went on the start and play in the first women’s professional game in the United States. When the WBL folded after three years, Liz (and other WBL players) would influence this profession and players over the next four decades. Liz, along with eleven former WBL players formed Legends of the Ball, Inc. As president, her mission is to bring this league out of the shadows and tell the compelling story of pioneers of Title IX, the AIAW, the Olympics, the WBL, so that everyone that followed will know whose shoulders they stand on.
