Back in action for another autumn on the rails of the former Chesapeake & Ohio Railway, Norfolk & Western J Class #611 was once again tasked with hauling the Shenandoah Valley Limited, hosted by the Virginia Scenic Railway on the Buckingham Branch Railroad. For the 2025 season, Steam Railroading Institute in Owosso, Michigan brought their fleet of restored passenger cars along for the journey, making for a nearly uniform consist to be pulled by the 611. The 611 was built in-house at the N&W’s own Roanoke Shops in 1950, 75 years ago this year, and what better way to celebrate than 5 weekends of racing through the scenic Shenandoah Valley of southwestern Virginia. These trips take passengers from the quiet town of Goshen, Virginia eastward to the city of Staunton, Virginia over the former C&O Mountain Subdivision, featuring the climb over North Mountain Grade along the original alignment of the C&O mainline.
