Is a transition to non-animal science possible? Maria Baltazar, team leader of Unilever's Safety Science Capability team, is convinced of this and is working hard to develop new scientific methods that do not require the use of animals. Like her, many scientists are working to develop new cruelty-free methods that are as - if not more - effective than those that use and exploit animals. On the occasion of European Day of Humane Science, we are launching our new ‘Lab of tomorrow’ video series, in which we invite scientists to tell us about their work and discoveries in order to raise awareness of the feasibility and effectiveness of non-animal science. Following the success of the ECI ‘Save Cruelty-Free Cosmetics’, signed by over 1.2 million European citizens, the European Commission has created a roadmap to phase out animal testing for chemical safety. This roadmap ''is a great example of how increasing collaboration can help accelerate acceptance of non-animal approaches.'' says Maria.
