Appellate courts, also known as the court of appeals, exist to hear and review appeals from legal cases already ruled on in lower courts. They determine if the court applied the law correctly and are present at both the state and federal levels, with no jury involved. Supreme courts have more authority than appellate courts, and there are 13 appellate courts on the federal level. An example of an appellate court ruling is the case of Uber and Lyft in California, where the appellate court decided to delay the implementation of a new state law reclassifying gig workers. However, in October 2020, the California appeals court ruled the law legal and enforceable, requiring Uber and Lyft to treat their drivers as employees. f328
