Saving Aqua, Waking Ven | Kingdom Hearts III | Part 28

Hey, everybody. This is part twenty-eight of my journey through Kingdom Hearts III on Critical Mode. In this chapter, Sora, Donald, and Goofy receive a distress call from Chip and Dale who reveal that they lost contact with Riku and Mickey in the Realm of Darkness. Sora chides his friends for not letting him go when he had the chance since Mickey figured out a way to get to the Realm of Darkness using his Keyblade, the Star Cluster, which is the modified/upgraded version of the Kingdom Key D. Sora lets his heart and Keyblade guide him once more, which leads him to the Destiny Islands. On the sands, Sora finds the Master's Defender, the Keyblade of the late Master Eraqus, which Aqua lost during the events of A Fragmentary Passage and somehow was never found by Sora previously when he and Riku returned to the Destiny Islands at KHII's end. Sora unwittingly uses the Master's Defender to open a door to the Realm of Darkness and has Donald and Goofy wait outside just in case something happens to him, much to their worry. On the Dark Margin, Riku and Mickey struggle against a Demon Tower and Mickey gets engulfed by the tower and Master Aqua emerges from the shadows, revealing herself to have been corrupted by darkness after Ansem, Seeker of Darkness's attack. Anti-Aqua berates Mickey, trapped in the Tower's core, for leaving her in the darkness for so long before Riku fights the Demon Tower. Sora arrives just in time to help save Mickey. Anti-Aqua tries to attack Riku but Sora intervenes and knocks some sense into her, freeing her from the corruption. In Radiant Garden, Vexen recruits Demyx to help him and Ansem the Wise and Ansem returns to his rightful place in his study, reuniting with Ienzo, Aeleus, and Dilan. Demyx gives Ienzo a present from Vexen: a replica for Roxas. After returning to the Realm of Light, Aqua returns to Castle Oblivion with Sora, Donald, and Goofy in tow. Aqua uses the Master's Defender to somehow revert Castle Oblivion back to the Land of Departure and miraculously dispelling the darkness that Master Xehanort plunged the land into. They locate Ven, who is still asleep, only to be interrupted by the arrival of Vanitas, who is looking for his "brother". Aqua battles Vanitas but uses her body as a shield to protect Ven from a triple dark firaga attack despite having a barrier. Vanitas is about to finish Aqua off, but Ven's heart stirs within Sora. Ven reveals that Sora never truly lost the Power of Waking and just has to call to it with everything he has. Sora uses the Power of Waking and restores Ven's heart to his body. Ven, finally awake after 11 years, launches himself at Vanitas and chases him off. Ven is also shocked to see that Sora and Vanitas share the same face, but understands why they do. The group finally returns to the Mysterious Tower. Yen Sid thanks Sora, Donald, Goofy, Riku, and Mickey for all their efforts while expressing relief to see Ven and Aqua safe and sound and congratulating Kairi and Lea for becoming proper Keyblade wielders. Ven remembers Lea, who still goes by Axel, much to his relief and Aqua realizes that Kairi is the same little girl she met in Radiant Garden with Mickey 11 years ago. Axel is stressed from all this new information and expresses his exasperation with having to explain all this to Roxas eventually, especially the fact that Roxas and Ven look identical. Jiminy reveals that he has Gummiphones on hand for everyone so they can read up on events and catch up on everything just in case they have questions. Ven and Aqua catch up outside the tower where Ven reveals that he was in a dream-like state where he saw bits of Sora's adventures while in Sora's heart. Aqua, having severe depression and PTSD from her long isolation, isn't as chipper as Ven, but gladly agrees to share stories with Terra and Ven when they get their friend back. Pete and Maleficent end their search for the Black Box in Twilight Town and Maleficent decides to wait until the Keyblade War is over before searching again. Axel and Saïx have a talk atop the Twilight Town clock tower over some Sea-Salt Ice Cream and Saïx reveals that they apprenticed to Ansem the Wise to rescue a girl that was being experimented on by Xehanort in secret. The girl vanished without a trace and they suspected Xehanort, so Axel helped Saïx rise through the ranks of the Organization when they became Nobodies to hopefully find out what happened to her from Xemnas himself. They failed and Saïx decided to focus on the Organization to make up for his failure. At the Destiny Islands, Riku and his Replica talk and Sora and Kairi finally share a Paopu Fruit so their destinies would be forever intertwined, no matter the outcome of the looming battle ahead.
