Chicago cultural historian Timuel Black (1918-2021) speaks about the importance of education

In honor of EducationMakers: Shaping Generations, we salute Chicago cultural historian, educator, civil rights activist, and author Timuel D. Black , Jr. (1918-2021), who speaks about his professional journey and the importance of education. After serving in the United States Army during World War II, Black returned to school to become a social worker. He soon transitioned from social work to education and taught at a variety of high schools, colleges, and universities. Black, who coined the phrase "plantation politics,” is a pioneer in the independent black political movement and an expert in African American history. Timuel Black has run for public office several times, including campaigns for Chicago's 4th Ward alderman, state senator of the 22nd District and state representative of the 22nd District. Black has spent his life furthering the cause of social justice and in the 1960s, he served as president of the Negro American Labor Council (Chicago Chapter) and helped organize Chicago’s participation in the historic 1963 March on Washington. Black’s devotion to activism continued into the 21st century when he was the named plaintiff in the civil rights class action lawsuit Black v. McGuffage which claimed that the Illinois voting system discriminated against minorities in its use of faulty punch card ballots, which were deployed in black and Hispanic neighborhoods in Chicago, and prevented residents from casting valid votes in the 2000 presidential election. After Black v. McGuffage, punch card ballots were eliminated and a uniform voting system was put in place. Black has written three essential books focusing on black Chicago history to date: Bridges of Memory: Chicago's First Wave of Great Migration (2003), Bridges of Memory: Chicago's Second Generation of Great Migration (2007), and Sacred Grounds: The Chicago Streets of Timuel Black as Told to Susan Klonsky (2019).
