NOTE FROM TED: This talk contains a graphic discussion of rape and contains commentary which only represents the speaker’s personal understanding of the impact of pornographic content. We've flagged this talk because it falls outside the content guidelines TED gives TEDx organizers. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: http://storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/t... Kat Alano is a brave woman who has been as vocal sharing her story of surviving rape and fighting for justice as in supporting other survivors. She challenges us to confront the uncomfortable realities that we often ignore or avoid in our curated social media lives. She reveals how she faced backlash, isolation and career loss after speaking out against her rapist, but also how she found strength, healing and purpose in her struggle. She reminds us that we have the power to change the narrative of rape culture and support other survivors. In this powerful talk, she advises us to take time to heal and reclaim our life! A Filipino British artist, former show-business personality and MTV VJ turned advocate, Kat Alano has taken the issue of rape culture in the industry and Philippines head on. A survivor of sexual assault, she uses her voice to create a safer World for victims by changing cultural dogmas and opening people’s eyes to the truth about rape. She has been a key speaker at events in partnership with institutions such as the Swedish and UK embassies, The Philippine Senate, The Office of the Vice President and UN Women. Kat extends her advocacy through her creativity in filmmaking, where she tackles cultural issues. She writes, produces and will soon be directing her first pilot. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
