Police promised to track down those behind Thursday's attacks, which officials said bore the hallmarks of al-Qaida. Investigators were looking for evidence in the debris and in the video footage from some 1,800 cameras in London's train stations. London's Metropolitan Police said at least 50 people were killed and about 700 injured in Thursday's bloody, coordinated attack. Police added that the toll was unlikely to reach triple figures. At Aldgate station, people began laying flowers in remembrance of the victims of the blast. Much of the London Underground service was restored on Friday. Double-decker buses were also operational, but carried only a handful of people. Many tube stations and roads were almost empty. Police were stationed inside and outside several stations, carefully watching passing commuters. Tube stations opened at the usual time, around 5:30 a.m. (0430 GMT), and trains were running normally on many of the system's 12 lines. Buses were running on their usual routes, with some diversions around blast sites. The series of four explosions - three on subway cars and one on a double-decker bus - prompted authorities to shut down the Underground system completely on Thursday, stranding thousands of residents and commuters. Many of London's eight (m) million residents rely heavily on the network, and the closures forced thousands to walk or struggle to find a cab. Outside Aldgate Underground station on Friday, people from various religions held a prayer vigil.
