The story is based around Joseph Conrad's 1908 novella, 'The Duel'. Two French Hussars are at odds with each other during and after the Napoleonic Wars; they fight each other in a series of duels. This sequence shows the first duel between the two main characters; Armand d'Hubert (played by Keith Carradine) vs. Gabriel Feraud (played by Harvey Keitel) The insult that starts the feud between the pair occurs in the streets of Strasbourg when Lt.d'Hubert dares mention Lt.Feraud's socialite flame, Madame de Lionne, from whose salon concert they've just left. Not very clearly audible in the scene is Feraud's reply of outrage towards the quip made by d'Hubert. He is incensed that Madame. de Lionne's name should be used in their argument related to Feraud's initial duel for which he is being put under house-arrest. Feraud says, "You think that name's common coin for the street? - Have a care! HAVE A CARE!" More info at Google Books - https://books.google.com/books?id=3yI...
