Royal wedding flower predictions as florist is announced

(3 Apr 2018) LEAD IN The florist chosen for the Royal wedding of Meghan and Harry has been confirmed as London based Phillipa Craddock. Peonies, white roses and foxgloves are to feature - but how will these English favourites be displayed and what kinds of trends could they set? STORY-LINE Floral designer Ricky Paul is used to providing luxury flower installations for weddings and other major events. Today he's putting the finishing touches to one of his signature French Bulldog sculptures, which has a regal touch thanks to a sparkling, diamante crown. The world of florists is currently abuzz following the long awaited announcement that London based Phillipa Craddock will provide the floral displays for the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. A series of Tweets from Kensington Palace revealed details including that "locally sourced foliage" would be used and that Craddock will aim for "plants that are in season and blooming naturally in May, including branches of beech, birch and hornbeam, as well as white garden roses, peonies and foxgloves." This choice of flowers offers some hints towards the style of the wedding Meghan and Harry might be planning. But how do the experts imagine these blooms chosen to "represent them as a couple" will be arranged and displayed? "I think being a bit playful with the colours is where they're going to be most focussed," says Ricky Paul. "People are just having big installations, people want to make more of a focus or impact on their wedding. So we used to find people would have lots and lots of arrangements on all the tables. Now we're sort of focussing more on huge fireplaces or arches for entrances, lots of flowers adorning the top table." Paul draws his inspiration from fashion, theatre and set design and is renowned for his innovative and unique designs. When asked what treatment he'd give to the Royal flowers he says: "I think we'd try to do something a bit different, maybe have something like a stunning arch or more of a tunnel you could kind of walk through and with all flowers hanging to give a real summery vibe. Maybe even including some sort of jasmine and things that give it a bit of fragrance, which would really work well with peonies and roses." The inclusion of peonies came as little surprise as Meghan has frequently mentioned her love for them on social media. An Instagram post of a bunch of the blooms, added shortly after she started dating Harry, is widely believed to suggest they were one of his first gifts to her. But now, according to florists, their popularity is likely to soar thanks to the Meghan effect. Elle magazine is already calling them "the new avocado". East London florists Rebel Rebel are busy on the opening day of their new store in Hackney's Mare Street Market. Established in 2000 and described by Time Out London as the Best Florists of 2017, they know all there is to know about floral trends. Co-owner Athena Duncan says: "May and June couldn't be a better time for peonies and we've all heard that Meghan likes peonies. So I would rather guess that that's what will be looked at first and foremost." She adds that, since most brides are looking for inspiration for their big day, sales of peonies are likely to soar after the Royal wedding. "Lots of brides don't have a favourite flower or don't really think about flowers until they're forced to for their wedding day. So if you've seen this beautiful bouquet, yes I suspect that there will be a lot of people who will be following what will become a fashion and they'll be much, much required."
