Entry from: Lucerne, Switzerland Entry Title: "Lovely Lucern" Entry: "We started out the day by checking out of the Lion Lodge hostel because we found a couch surfer. Hooray- couch surfung is a real life saver. The hostel cost us 34 US dollars a night per person... sounds cheap compared to a hotel, but most hostels are under 20 USD. We then went on a self-guided walking tour of the City. Most cities we have been in have had free walking tours that tell you about the city... but not Lucern. They try to charge you 24 dollars. The office that offers the tour however provides free maps of the tour route complete with explanations. We took two of these maps and did the tour ourselves. Americans know how to beat the system. We saw some great old buildings (see the pictures) walked on the chapel bridge and on another similar wooden bridge... which the name I forget. Also saw the Lion Monument (a memorial to swiss soldiers). On our tour we saw a big white castle called Buscht. It was very pretty but it is completely empty currently. It used to be a hotel, but now it is emtpy, apparently Michael Jackson had been interested in purchasing it. After the tour we went on the "tower walk". A wall used to line the city (to protect it as a fortess). We walked the length of the wall, saw some swiss cows, and went into two towers. We had a great view of the City from these towers. We did a bit of shopping and wandering around. We went into one particular shop twice. I tripped walking in and out of this shop each time. (everyone should know by now that Amanda cannot walk!). We met up with Adrian, our couch host and he is very nice. He has a huge apartment ten minutes from central lucern and has helped us to plan out much of our plans for tomorrow. He also gave us beer. Plans for tomorrow are a bit hesitant. Mt Pilatus costs over 100 dollars per person to go up, there is another mountain called büchenstock (sounds a bit like birkenstock) and there is an elevator that goes to the top (thats right an elevator!) We have to take a boat to get there through Lake Lucern... and its a bit cheaper. We will see where we end up... alot depends on the weather.
