This frees up your senses to listen to fine details in the different sounds that birds make. We outline the different uses of sounds by birds, and hear an example of each. Courtship and territorial calls - the two main uses of bird sound, and the type you're most likely to hear in the spring. Alarm calls - warning other birds of the same or different species that danger is nearby. Contact calls - keeping the flock together. Mobbing calls - Recruiting other birds to chase off a predator. Chick call - identifying chicks. Echolocation call - used by Swiftlets and Oilbirds to navigate in dark caves. Mimic call - Parrots, lyrebirds, corvids, and more will copy the sounds they hear. Mysterious call - most other bird sounds are mysteries! Thanks to the Bird Sounds Collection at the Florida Museum of Natural History!
