不二法门 The One and Only Way 《维摩诘经》里面最精彩的是不二法门 The most wonderful part in Vimalakirti Sutra is the One and Only Way. 僧肇在《维摩诘所说经注序》里面就说 Sengzhao has mentioned this in The notes of Vimalakīrtinirdeśa-sūtra, 语宗极则以不二为门 The ultimate of Buddhism is the One and Only Way. 意思是说这部经文的所说佛理的极致就是不二法门 It means the ultimate of Buddhism described in the Scriptures is the One and Only Way. 不二法门是《维摩诘经》里面提倡的一个重要的法门 The One and Only Way is an important part being mentioned in Vimalakirti Sutra. 经文中说 三十二位菩萨讨论了什么是不二法门之后 It says, after 32 Bodhisattva discussing what was the one and only way, 文殊菩萨特意向维摩诘询问什么是不二法门 Manjusri Bodhisattva also asked Vimalakirti about it. 维摩诘是默然无言 But Vimalakirti didn’t say a word, and kept silent for a long time without saying anything. 文殊就领会到了维摩诘的用意 佩服之极 Manjusri understood his meaning, and expressed his admiration for Vimalakirti.欢欢喜喜地赞叹说 He praised Vimalakirti and said, 善哉善哉！乃至无有文字语言 是真入不二法门！”（《维摩诘经•入不二法门品》） “Good! Beyond any word, it is the real meaning of The One and Only Way!”(Vimalakirti Sutra•To Enter One and Only Way article) There's no word left. 已经完全超越了语言文字的层面了 It's beyond the level of language. 这是真正的进入了最高的不二法门了 This really enters the highest level of the One and Only Way, and it has already beyond the level of expressions. 那么什么是不二法门呢 Then what’s the One and Only Way? 所谓二 就是相对立的观念 So called Er (literally two), is the opposite idea. 不二 就是超越对立的观念 Bu Er (literally no two) is the idea beyond opposition. 不二法门 就是超越所有相对的观念 Bu Er Fa Men (literally no two ways) is beyond all the opposite ideas, 来进入开悟的境界 so as to enter the level of enlightenment. 《维摩诘经》不二法门的意义 它在哪里呢 What is the meaning of the One and Only Way in Vimalakirti Sutra? 它的意义就在于强调世间与出世间的不二 It lies in emphasizing the consistency in the world and outside the world. Vimalakirti himself is a very good example of it. He plays through life, enjoying the splendor and wealth of the world. At the same time he is proficient in Buddhism and free from the pollution of the world. He’s rich but not greedy. Temptation exists but he does not touch. Such a high level 不二法门倡导的生活方式, is the lifestyle of the One and Only Way, 打通了在家与出家 此岸与彼岸这样的一种隔阂 which has broken through the gap between becoming a monk or not and temporality or Faramita. 《六祖坛经》说 The Sutra of Hui Neng says, 佛法在世间 不离世间觉 离世觅菩提 恰如求兔角 Buddha Dharma exists in the world, so it can’t be divorced from reality. If it can, it will be the same as requiring rabbit to grow horns. 这个可以看作是对在家与出家不二法门的精采发挥 This can be seen as a brilliant display of the One and Only Way in becoming a monk or not. 《维摩诘经》里面还强调 Vimalakirti Sutra also emphasizes that 要成为菩萨 becoming Bodhisattva is not only for monks 在家人也照样可以修成菩萨 but also for laymen. 小乘认为要实现理想 Hinayana believes that if you want to achieve dreams, 非得出家过一种禁欲的生活不可 you have to become a monk and live an ascetic life. 而大乘佛教在这方面就解放了 However, Mahayana is liberated in this aspect. 它特别强调 在它的初期 特别强调 It especially emphasizes, in its initial stage, 在家照样可以修行 并且修得很高很高的境界 that you can practice at home, and you can also reach a high level. 所以大乘佛教在它发展的初期 So, in Mahayana’s initial stage, 是以居士佛教为主流的 lay Buddhist is the main current. 任继愈先生说 Mr.Ren Jiyu says, “从普遍意义上说 维摩诘的出现 标志着大乘佛教的世俗化运动已达到高潮 ‘出家’和‘在家’的界限已被抹杀 甚至‘在家’高于‘出家’ ”（《中国佛教史》） “In a general sense, the appearance of Vimalakirti has marked the climax of the secularization movement of Mahayana Buddhism. The boundary between ‘becoming a monk’ and ‘being a layman’ has been eliminated, and even ‘being a layman" is higher than ‘becoming a monk’”(History of Chinese Buddhism) 维摩范式 The Normal Form of Vimalakirti 金粟如来化身的维摩诘居士 What kind of life does the Lay Buddhist Vimalakirti, 又是过着怎样的生活呢 经文中说 the embodiment of Jinsu Tathagata, live? Scriptures say, 虽为白衣 奉持沙门清净律行 ……示有妻子 常修梵行 ……虽复饮食 而以禅悦为味 ……一切治生谐耦 虽获俗利 不以喜悦 ……入诸淫舍 示欲之过 （《维摩诘经》） Being a lay Buddhist, he's very strict with the precepts... Though having a family, he’s practicing Sanskrit... Though eating, he takes the joyous of Zen as delicious food... Though rich, he will not turn into a new upstart...Though entering the red-light district, he is to point out the disadvantage of desire for sex workers. (Vimalakirti Sutra) 经文讲维摩诘虽然是个居士 It says that although Vimalakirti is a lay Buddhist, 但是他的持戒却很精严 he's very strict with the precepts. 虽然有妻子儿女 他却修的是梵行 《维摩诘经》经文说 Vimalakirti Sutra says, 火中生莲花 是可谓稀有 It is rare for lotus to survive in fire, 在欲而行禅 希有亦如是！ and it’s the same as having desire but the heart is still clean! 这是多么让人向往的生活方式啊 What an attractive way of life it is! 既可以行走在红尘 又可以保持心性的清净 You can keep your mind clean when walking in the world of mortals. 既可以享受世俗的快乐 又可以体会出世间的快乐 You can experience the happiness of renouncing the world while enjoying the worldly happiness. 既拥有现实的欲望 又得到了超越的境界 You can have both realistic desire and transcendental realm. 这就是维摩范式 This is the Normal Form of Vimalakirti.
