(31 Oct 1994) STORY: CLINTON LOCATION: HAFR AL-BATIN, SAUDI ARABIA DATE: 28 OCTOBER 1994 DURATION: 1.55 Iraq sanctions stay, agrees King Fahd US president Bill Clinton arrived in Saudi Arabia on Friday (28/10) at the end of a tour of the Middle East where he told Iraq it would never again be allowed to threaten its small neighobour Kuwait. Clinton was met at the airport in Hafr al-Batin by Saudi Arabia's King Fahd, who awarded him a medal which Saudi officials said was the highest honour in the kingdom. The US leader, on the final stop on a four-day six-nation tour, then went into talks with King Fahd. Among issues on the agenda were Saudi Arabia's role in the Middle East peace process and the situation in the Gulf. The US leader's meeting with the king was also attended by the Saudi crown prince, Sheikh Abdallah ibn Abdel Aziz and Defence Minister Sheikh Sultan ibn Abdel Aziz. In a joint communique issued after their meeting, they agreed that sanctions against Iraq should not be lifted until Baghdad had fully complied with United Nations resolutions. Issued from the US president's plane as Clinton started home, the communique continued: "Consequently, any other efforts inconsistent with the Security Council resolutions would only result in encouraging the Iraqi regime to continue its aggressive policies and to flout the will of the international community."
