Spanda Karika Verse 4 invites us to look carefully at our everyday language. We often say, I am happy, I am sad, I am angry. Yet these emotions arise because of changing situations and do not remain for long. The verse points to a subtle confusion where the experience and the experiencer become mixed. Happiness appears and disappears. Sorrow comes and goes. But something remains constant through all these changes. Just as a screen allows many images to appear without becoming the images themselves, awareness allows every emotional state without being altered by it. The verse gently reminds us that emotions are passing states within consciousness. When this is observed carefully, a quiet space opens. In that space we begin to recognise the deeper awareness in which all experiences arise and dissolve.
