Emerging Markets and MSCI Today we’re going to explain what Emerging Markets Are and What MSCI Emerging Market Index is. The term emerging market was invented by the World Bank employees. They were trying to drive more investments towards what they called “third world countries” so they created this fancy names in order to drive more investments into poorer countries. Different organizations and institutional investors have different parameters to determine whether a country is emerging or not. Usually emerging countries have average weighs lower compared to the so called Developed countries like the US, UK; Germany, France, Italy and so on… even though there are some exeptions like the UAE and South Korea. The second parameter is that these country have higher economic growth year by year compared to developed countries. Another characteristic of the emerging markets is that they have high volatility. Any fear towards a certain country will result in drop in the value of the national currency and, since most of their debt is US Dollars or other foreign currencies, the country will be in big trouble. Since they have debt in foreign currencies they won’t be able to solve their problems by just printing more cash like the US and the European Union are doing. The MSCI Emerging Market Index tracks the performance of stocks in some of the Emrging Markets. This index is invested in 26 countries: Argentina, Brazil. Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Perù, Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Hungary, Kuwait, Poland, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, China, India, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, Philippines, Taiwan and Thailand. This index is reviewd twp times per year: in May and November. The MSCI Emerging Markets index became so popular that is almost used as a benchmark for those investing in emerging countries.
