An MRI defecogram is a special type of MRI test that takes detailed images of the pelvic floor, rectum, and sphincter muscles to diagnose conditions like constipation, fecal incontinence, and pelvic organ prolapse. The procedure involves filling the rectum with a contrast agent to simulate stool and then taking MRI images at various stages of a simulated bowel movement to observe the structure and function of the pelvic organs. This non-invasive technique provides excellent soft tissue detail and uses no ionizing radiation, making it a valuable tool for understanding pelvic floor disorders. What it is and what it's used for Purpose: To evaluate how well the pelvic muscles are working and diagnose problems with rectal function, such as obstructed defecation syndrome. Conditions diagnosed: Constipation, fecal incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, and other pelvic floor dysfunctions. How it's done Rectal contrast: A contrast medium is inserted into the rectum to make it and other pelvic organs visible on the MRI. MRI imaging: The patient lies in an MRI scanner while the rectum is full of contrast. Simulated defecation: The patient is then asked to perform actions like straining and then relaxing, or a full bowel movement, to capture images of the pelvic floor in motion. Benefits No ionizing radiation: Unlike fluoroscopic defecography, it does not expose the patient to radiation. Detailed soft tissue contrast: MRI provides excellent soft tissue detail, which is crucial for assessing the pelvic floor muscles and organs. Dynamic assessment: It allows for the visualization of the dynamic process of defecation and the interaction between pelvic organs. What to expect Preparation: You may be asked to take certain medications or adjust your eating habits before the exam. During the test: You will lie in the MRI machine and may feel some discomfort as the rectal contrast is inserted and you simulate defecation. After the test: You may be able to resume normal activities right away, but you should follow your doctor's post-exam instructions.
