Jeanne Gautier, with piano probably by Joaquin Nin, plays 'Meditation,' recorded in Paris in 1929. From French Wikipedia (translated): Jeanne Charlotte Gautier was born in Asnières, France, on 18 September 1898. She studied violin in Paris in the class of Henri Berthelier. She distinguished herself at an early age, winning the 'Petits Prodiges' gold medal at the Paris Conservatoire in 1908. Prior to World War I, and still at the Paris Conservatoire, Gautier became friends with cellist André Levy, with whom she would create the Trio de France some forty years later. Both won their Premier Prix in 1914. Gautier married Cuban composer Joaquín Nin (1879-1949); this relationship helped develop her interest in and knowledge of Spanish music. Au Jardin de Lindaraja, Dialogue pour piano et violon (1926) by Nin is dedicated to Gautier. In one of his appearances at a Musical Society in Paris in May 1927, he performed a transcription of Nin's Cantos populares españolas with the composer at the piano. In 1929 they made several recordings for Odeon. In March 1937 he played Pastorales pour violon et orchestre (1919) by French composer Aimé Kunc (1887-1958) with the Orchestre Colonne conducted by Paul Paray. Gautier moved to Australia in 1939 after an A.B.C. Concert tour and remained there for several years. In 1942 she was appointed to the Melbourne University Conservatory where she taught the young Beryl Kimber, Leonard Dommett and many Australian violinists of the same generation. Gauthier represents one of the prime examples of the direct influence of the French school in Australia. For a brief period after World War II, Gautier moved to California, where she collaborated with Igor' Fyodorovich Stravinsky on the Duo Concertante for violin and piano and on the transcription of Ballade from Le baiser de la fée, 1947. Shortly after the war, the French composer Claude Arrieu (1903-1990) introduced her to the young pianist Geneviève Joy: it was the beginning of a musical friendship; the artists gave a series of concerts in Germany. In the 1950s, Jeanne Gautier, Geneviève Joy and André Levy founded of a trio called 'Trio de France,' whose activity was largely devoted to French and contemporary music. In 1950, his 78-rpm recording of De Falla's Suite Populaire Espagnole with Nadine Desouches received positive reviews. Gautier continued an intense teaching activity in France: she was appointed to the National Conservatory of Lyon in October 1952, and a year later, in addition, she was in charge of the chamber music course. She lived in Paris. She retired in July 1968. Due to health problems, she was forced to sell her violin to pay her medical bills; she missed during the winter of 1973-74 [and died on 6 January 1974]. Gautier held a diploma in violin making. She recorded mainly for two French record labels, Le Chant du Monde and Odeon. I transferred this side fromOdeon 166.019.
