Significant unrest is ongoing at the populated Kanlaon volcano, and soon may result in its first magmatic eruption in more than a century. Current warning signs include escalating rates of earthquakes, record levels of sulfur dioxide emissions, and the occurrence of several distinct centers of ground uplift. Every single one of Kanlaon's two dozen eruptions during the last 100 years have been purely phreatic. However, with sulfur dioxide emissions currently at greater than 10,000 tons a day, Kanlaon may soon produce a magmatic eruption which produces an andesite lava flow.
