World Heavyweight Champion, Muhammad Ali, takes on former 2 x World Heavyweight Champion, Floyd Patterson. It would be Ali's 2nd title defence and he was harbouring some serious hate towards Patterson. More info below... Floyd Patterson was a very talented and experienced boxer who is often referred to as "the forgotten champion". He made history in 1960 by becoming the first ever man to win back the World Heavyweight Championship, an achievement that many men had attempted going as far back as "Gentleman" Jim Corbett in 1900. But unfortunately his years as Champion were mostly forgettable (bar the above achievement) and because a number of other men would achieve the goal of becoming a multi-time World Heavyweight Champion over the years he is most only remembered these days for his 2 lop-sided defeats at the hands of Sonny Liston. Not to mention, at the end of his career he was also trying to share the limelight with the most famous boxer of all time in Muhammad Ali. By 1965 Patterson still had a decent 43-4 record all things considered, and he was on a 5 win streak since losing his rematch with Sonny Liston for World heavyweight title in 1963. Although only 30 years old, Patterson was giving away 7 years to a much younger and larger Muhammad Ali, not to mention Patterson was in his 13th year as a professional and had been through many wars whereas Ali was only 5 years into his illustrious career and still undefeated. Patterson may have beaten some class acts in his time such as George Chuvalo, Archie Moore, Yvon Durelle, Eddie Machen and Ingemar Johansson just to name a few, but none of them could compare to the natural ability that Muhammad Ali had... Patterson was vocal with his displeasure at seeing a Muslim as World heavyweight Champion and vowed to bring the title back to the USA. He no doubt had a lot of supporters who agreed with him and Ali took great offence at the remarks, vowing to humiliate Patterson referring to him as "White American" and "Uncle Tom". Patterson entered the fight with Ali as the clear underdog. He was smaller, older and would be fighting with a bad back preventing him from being able to bob and weave effectively. Ali had all the advantages bar experience, but even with the lack of overall experience Ali had already twice beaten the man who had twice beaten Patterson in Sonny Liston! For pretty much 12 rounds Ali had his way with Patterson, it was clear as early as the 6th Rd that Patterson was hurting and it looked like he was struggling to walk, a combination of his sore back and Ali's punches. Ali looked very relaxed, throwing outs jabs and straights but he was intentionally not trying to knock Patterson out, he wanted to prolong the punishment and was screaming abuse at Patterson throughout the fight. Patterson took a knee in the 6th Rd after absorbing repeated unanswered jabs but he got to his feet to carry on. Ali toyed with Patterson for the remainder of the fight, finally in Rd 12 the ref had seen enough, it was clear Patterson had nothing, he hadn't come close to landing a telling punch all night. The crowd boo'd Ali after the stoppage as they felt he had been cruel and disrespectful by not knocking Patterson out. Even the legendary Joe Louis who was at ringside would say Clay (Ali) was "selfish and cruel". Patterson was honest in his defeat saying "In my honest opinion, if I was watching the fight at home on TV, I would have wanted it stopped, but I preferred to be counted out." A lot of people felt Patterson might throw in the towel after this defeat but surprisingly he remained active for a further 7 years with decent success and even got himself a rematch with Ali in 1972 for the NABF Heavyweight title (which can be viewed on my channel here -    • Muhammad Ali vs Floyd Patterson II 20.9.19...  ). Although the outcome was same, Patterson fought a much better fight in the rematch with Ali even stating afterwards, "Patterson is a great, great fighter. I thought he'd be nothing, but he surprised me. I didn't knock him out. I didn't get him on a TKO. All I did was close his eye." Patterson retired after the loss with a still very respectable 55-8-1 record.
