I thought I’d share a few experiments in feedback with guitar pedals that I’ve been doing recently. This one is based on the ‘honking geese’ feedback trick by Todd Barton where you send a VCO to a phaser and send the output of the phaser back to the CV in on the VCO. The nice thing about the Bad Stone is that you can turn off the internal LFO/modulation on the pedal and sweep it manually with the knob. A lot of other phaser pedals don’t have this feature and I’ve found it super helpful and flexible in a feedback setup. This year I’ve been doing a lot of research into feedback systems for a piece that I’m working on. I went pretty deep (somewhat obsessed!) into David Tudor’s later work with feedback systems and his use of guitar pedals. I’ve done ‘no input mixer’ in the past and had a few pedals. I knew that Tudor mostly favoured phaser pedals and envelope filters to get his systems alive and I always wanted to try it but didn’t have any of those modulation type pedals. A friend of mine kindly lent me a bunch of pedals which got me going including the EHX Bad Stone and EHX Polyphase. It’s been really fun experimenting with them and getting to know the intricacies, sensitivities and character of each of these pedals and their role in the system. All these videos are just recorded on my phone in a quick and easy way. I might do some ones with direct sound at some point.
