Is it safe to smoke marijuana during pregnancy? A new study in the Journal of the American Medical Association Pediatrics suggests that children whose mothers used cannabis after the fifth or sixth week of pregnancy may be more likely to develop mental health problems as they approach their teen years. Although still a small percentage, the number of women using cannabis during pregnancy is growing so let’s discuss the study’s findings and some alternatives to cannabis for the treatment of pregnancy-related nausea. Mothers who were cannabis users, but quit when they learned they were pregnant. Mothers who continued to use cannabis after learning they were pregnant. The research revealed that exposure to cannabis in utero was associated with a higher risk of developing disorders such as ADHD, aggressive behavior, conduct disorder, and rule-breaking behavior. This is not proof of a problem, per se, but it is an extension of the long-term Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study, which has been tracking the brain development of nearly 12,000 children via MRI scans. The JAMA study also showed that children exposed to cannabis in utero tended to have lower birth weight, lower brain volume, and lower white matter volume. The impact of cannabis use was seen in the middle of the first trimester. Use of cannabis earlier in the pregnancy — before the moms discovered they were pregnant — did not appear to have an impact on the risk of the children developing behavior issues. The biggest limitation of the study is that the data set used by the researchers does not have information on how frequently the women were using cannabis, nor the form of the cannabis they used. Might extensively inhaled cannabis impact oxygenation of the blood and therefore oxygen delivery to the placenta? THC goes through the placenta and gets into the fetus. We know this b/c of urine testing of newborns. One of the more commonly used reasons for use after pregnancy is for treating nausea. Other ways to treat nausea include: Drinking ginger and mint tea (note: chamomile could stimulate uterine contractions) Eating frequent, small meals every 1–2 hours to avoid a full stomach. Avoiding spicy or fatty foods. Taking vitamin B6 with magnesium Using Sea Bands Sources: https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama... https://www.nbcnews.com/health/womens... -------- Dr. David is an independent thinker who draws from more than 25 years of clinical experience.
