SCMP Conversations - Rebel City - Contemplating the future of Hong Kong A year to the day since Hong Kong witnessed the first mass anti-extradition bill protest that brought out an estimated one million people onto the streets, the city is bracing itself for yet more demonstrations. Opposition against the legislation in 2019 morphed rapidly into a wider anti-government movement that has left no aspect of the city untouched, from its social compact, to its body politic, to its open economy. The demonstrations have tested every institution of the city; from the civil service, the police, the courts, and transport operators, to businesses, universities, schools, and churches. Reflecting on the year that has passed, and how has Hong Kong changed, what are the lessons to be drawn from a year of turmoil and how can the city move forward? SCMP's reporting team and co-editors of Rebel City: Hong Kong's Year of Water and Fire will look back at Hong Kong's most devastating political crisis since its return to Chinese rule in 1997. They will share their perspectives, reflections and stories, and explore questions such as: Why are the protests continuing and how have they changed over time? With the recent mass arrests, what is the stance of the government towards the protests and what hope is there of peace and reconciliation? What is the role of US-China relations in influencing the course of events in Hong Kong? Will the US continue to extend or cease the city’s preferential US trading and investment privileges, and what does this mean for Hong Kong’s future? Why is Beijing bypassing the city's legislature to enact a national security law tailor-made for the city by promulgation?
