The theoretical physicist Brian D. Josephson votes for staying open minded in doing research. In the interview during the 58th Nobel Laureates Meeting at Lindau he says it is good to follow special target, but one should also be prepared to discover something quite different. Josephson received the Nobel Prize in Physics 1973 for his his theoretical predictions of the properties of a supercurrent through a tunnel barrier, in particular those phenomena which are generally known as the Josephson effects. The other part of the Nobel Prize was shared by Leo Esaki and Ivar Giaever for their experimental discoveries regarding tunneling phenomena in semiconductors and superconductors, respectively.
